About

A large Tudor Revival public school of red brick with cast-stone trim and a green tiled hip roof, its long Shaw Boulevard front broken by two symmetrical entrance pavilions in place of a single central door. Each pavilion frames a round-arched doorway beneath a balustraded stone balcony and an oriel, flanked by carved lion-head roundels, with the incised lintel "Bryan Mullanphy School." Steep parapeted gables carry herringbone and diamond-diaper brickwork and bracketed bargeboards, and clustered brick chimney stacks rise along the ridge. Polychrome relief tile panels of animals are set into the gable-end walls; a side entrance is carved "Kindergarten." A stone-balustraded terrace fronts the raised basement.

History

Bryan Mullanphy School was built in 1915 for the St. Louis Public Schools in the Shaw neighborhood. It was designed by William B. Ittner, with Rockwell Milligan, and was the last school Ittner designed in the city of St. Louis; its twin-entrance, bilaterally symmetrical plan is characteristic of their schools. The school is named for the philanthropist Bryan Mullanphy. It remains a St. Louis Public Schools magnet, the Mullanphy Botanical Garden Investigative Learning Center.
