Harrison School was constructed in 1895 as part of the St. Louis Public Schools system's efforts to accommodate the city's rapidly growing population during the late nineteenth century. The building was designed by August Kirchner, a prolific architect who served as the official architect for the St. Louis Board of Education and was responsible for numerous school buildings throughout the city during this period. Like many neighborhood schools of its era, Harrison School was built to serve the children of working-class families in the surrounding residential area. Throughout the early twentieth century, Harrison School functioned as an elementary school serving generations of St. Louis students.
