Curlee Clothing Company Building (1128 Washington)

1901
Updated October 2026
About

An eight-story loft only a few windows wide, wedged between the low Knight Estate Building and the A.D. Brown Building on the south side of Washington Avenue. Off-white brick piers and spandrels frame the narrow front, and each floor holds a broad band of windows, wide center panes between narrower sidelights in the Chicago manner. A heavy molded brick band sets off the two-story base, and a plain parapet has replaced the original cornice. The storefront is modern glass. The east side wall, exposed above the two-story Knight Estate Building, is common red brick with a few small arched windows and a large faded painted sign, its big letters now too worn to read in full. The back, facing St. Charles Street, is the same off-white brick, plainer, with paired sash windows and a steel fire escape.

History

The Curlee Clothing Company started here in this Isaac Taylor-designed building of 1901, and is said to have expanded west into the neighboring A.D. Brown Building in 1915, and later built its larger factory at 1001 Washington Avenue. The storefront sat vacant in the early 2000s; by 2008 it housed Beso Mexican Grill. In October 2026 the storefront was empty and offered for lease.
