Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney Annex
A twelve-story warehouse of light buff brick trimmed in matching terra cotta, four bays wide across a 45-foot front on Locust Street. Unbroken brick piers rise the full height of the facade and end in arches at the top floor, with wide Chicago-style windows filling the bays between them. A terra cotta cornice carries a row of lion heads above metal dentils at the attic, and heavy terra cotta brackets and more lion heads mark the base.
Harry F. Roach designed the building as a warehouse for the Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney Dry Goods Company, whose department store stood across Locust Street in the Syndicate Trust Building. Built of reinforced concrete, twelve stories over a basement, it was completed in January 1914, and the store used it for storage into the 1950s. Later tenants included a senior citizens' center on the first two floors and the St. Louis Design Center, whose offices and galleries included Landmarks Association of St. Louis on the seventh floor. TWG Development of Indianapolis bought the building with its neighbors in the 900 block of Locust and in 2017 began converting it and the adjoining five-story Leacock Sporting Goods Building into Level on Locust, 88 apartments designed with ID8 Architects. The corner building at 10th and Locust was demolished for five townhouses.
