Mississippi Valley Trust Company Building

About

A two-story Beaux-Arts bank of grey granite wrapping the corner of Fourth and Pine on a rounded plan. Giant fluted Corinthian columns frame the curved corner entrance and continue as pilasters along the Pine Street front, where tall round-arched windows stand between them; the name MISSISSIPPI VALLEY TRUST COMPANY is carved across the frieze, and a paneled "SAFE DEPOSIT VAULTS" surround marks a side door. A heavy modillioned cornice and a balustraded parapet crown the walls, with a copper roof and skylight behind. Bronze rosettes fill the granite panels between the openings.

History

The Mississippi Valley Trust Company completed this bank at the corner of Fourth and Pine Streets in 1896, to a Beaux-Arts design by the St. Louis firm Eames & Young. The company financed transportation and communication ventures across the St. Louis region and backed the 1904 World's Fair. It was later absorbed by the Mercantile Bancorporation, which in turn passed to Firstar and then U.S. Bancorp — the same banking lineage that took in the Mercantile Trust building a few blocks away. The building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001 and is a St. Louis city landmark. After a period as a restaurant, it now houses the TechArtista coworking space and a coffee shop and cocktail bar named Trust, an homage to the building's origins.
