About

Meramec School is built in a Tudor Revival idiom distinct from Ittner's more monumental Collegiate Gothic high schools, with a domestic, cottage-like massing of steep, multiple cross-gables roofed in diamond-patterned clay tile. Tall brick chimneys rise above the roofline, and the brick is laid with contrasting light-colored stone trim at window openings. A round-arched niche set in a herringbone-brick surround holds a carved grotesque face medallion. The main entrance sits within a stone-trimmed archway at the building's central bay.

History

William B. Ittner designed Meramec School for the St. Louis Board of Education. It opened in 1910 at 2745 Meramec Street, replacing an earlier Meramec School of the same name that had stood on the site since 1870, according to the City of St. Louis's official neighborhood history. The school was named for Meramec Street, on which it sits, in the Dutchtown neighborhood, historically part of the Marquette-Cherokee area. A 1955 plan for improvements to the building is held in the St. Louis Public Schools records at the Missouri Historical Society. Meramec School continues to operate as Meramec Elementary School, part of St. Louis Public Schools, serving students in prekindergarten through fifth grade.
