About

Kirkwood High School exemplifies William B. Ittner's signature approach to educational architecture, featuring a stately Tudor Gothic design with red brick construction, stone trim, and decorative parapets that create an impression of academic permanence and dignity. The building's symmetrical facade, large multi-pane windows designed to maximize natural classroom light, and prominent central entrance reflect Ittner's influential philosophy of creating inspiring, functional learning environments.

History

Kirkwood High School opened in 1921, designed by William B. Ittner, the nationally renowned school architect who transformed educational building design across St. Louis and beyond. The school was built to serve the growing suburb of Kirkwood, one of Missouri's oldest planned communities, which had been established along the Missouri Pacific Railroad line in 1853. By the early twentieth century, Kirkwood's population had expanded significantly, necessitating a modern high school facility that could accommodate the community's educational ambitions. The school quickly became a central institution in Kirkwood life, serving generations of students throughout the twentieth century. As one of the premier public high schools in the St. Louis metropolitan area, Kirkwood High School developed strong academic and athletic programs that earned regional recognition. The campus underwent several expansions and renovations over the decades to meet the needs of a growing student population and evolving educational standards, though the original Ittner-designed structure remained at the heart of the complex. Kirkwood High School continues to operate today as the primary public high school serving the Kirkwood School District. The institution maintains its reputation as one of the leading secondary schools in the region, with the historic campus still anchoring the community along South Kirkwood Road. The school's longevity reflects both the quality of Ittner's original design and Kirkwood's sustained commitment to public education over more than a century.
