Jack Rabbit Candy Company Building

A three-story commercial building of brick with white glazed terra-cotta trim, its street front now painted blue-gray. The top floor rises to an elaborate terra-cotta cornice and parapet centered on a low half-round arch, above a frieze of paired console brackets and bead-and-reel and interlocking-ring courses. Second-floor windows sit in molded terra-cotta surrounds ornamented with cross-form rosettes, and the ground floor holds three broad openings framed by ornamental terra-cotta piers. The long side and rear elevations are plain painted brick with segmental-arched windows, many now bricked in or boarded.

The building was constructed in 1909-1911 for the Stoecker & Price Company, a furniture dealer and auction house, to a design by the St. Louis architect Herbert W. Powers; its original storefront tiles still read "Stoecker and Price." In 1940 the Jack Rabbit Candy Company took the building as its second manufacturing plant. Founded in 1918 by Eugene Tuchschmidt, Charles M. Vogel, and Henry Hill, the company made hard penny candies and novelties, among them a candy apple on a stick, and closed in 1952 after Vogel's death. The building later held an auto-parts store and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2007.
