A two-story brick elementary in the Ittner-Milligan school manner: two identical front portals, each flanked by perpendicular classroom wings, giving the plan a paired T-shape. The design fuses Tudor Revival with Northern-European Mannerism — the portals carry terracotta sculpting of Italian character set against decorative brickwork of Northern-European origin, a bay projects from the front facade, and compound Tudor chimneys rise above the roofline. Decorative woodwork trims the flanking wings.
Alexander Hamilton Elementary School opened in 1917 as a St. Louis public school, named for the founding father Alexander Hamilton, and was designed by Rockwell Milligan of William B. Ittner, Inc. It stands north of Forest Park in the Skinker-DeBaliviere neighborhood and has operated continuously as a neighborhood elementary school, marking its centennial in 2017.
