Froebel School
A brick school of 1895 on Nebraska Avenue in Gravois Park, begun as a plain eight-room schoolhouse to designs by August H. Kirchner and enlarged by later additions. It is the oldest school building in the neighborhood.
Froebel School opened on February 12, 1895 as the Nebraska Avenue School, an eight-room brick schoolhouse designed by August H. Kirchner. On April 9, 1895, the board renamed it for Friedrich Froebel, the German educator who founded the kindergarten. Later additions and renovations enlarged the building over the following century. It has carried several names in turn — Froebel School, Froebel Elementary, and today Froebel Literacy Academy — and it remains an operating St. Louis public school, the oldest educational building in Gravois Park.
