A brick school built in 1901 to designs by William B. Ittner, among his early work after he became the St. Louis Board of Education's Commissioner of School Buildings in 1897. Its broad plan and wide bands of windows put Ittner's light-and-air "open plan" into practice, pulling daylight deep into classrooms that older four-square schoolhouses had left dim.
Field School opened in 1901, one of the wave of new St. Louis public schools that followed William B. Ittner's 1897 appointment as Commissioner of School Buildings. It took its name from Eugene Field (1850–1895), the St. Louis newspaperman known as the "Children's Poet." The St. Louis Public Schools closed the building in 1995, then briefly reopened it in 2001 to hold students while their own schools had air conditioning installed. Soon after, the district sold it, and it was converted to multi-family housing. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.
