About

The Blustein's Bride's House Building is a modest four-story commercial structure featuring the restrained ornamentation typical of late 19th-century downtown retail architecture. Its narrow storefront façade rises with simple window arrangements and subtle decorative brickwork, representing the functional commercial vernacular that once characterized Locust Street's shopping district.

History

The building at 1010 Locust Street was constructed in 1886 during a period of rapid commercial expansion in downtown St. Louis. Locust Street had emerged as one of the city's premier retail corridors, attracting merchants who catered to the growing middle-class population. The architect responsible for this building remains unknown, though it was likely the work of a local designer producing speculative commercial space for the busy shopping district. The structure became most closely associated with Blustein's Bride's House, a bridal shop that operated from the address and gave the building its lasting identity. Bridal retailers were common fixtures along downtown shopping streets during this era, serving customers who traveled from throughout the region to purchase wedding attire and trousseau items. The business contributed to Locust Street's reputation as a destination for specialty retail goods. Like many downtown commercial buildings, 1010 Locust has witnessed the dramatic transformation of its surroundings over more than a century. The gradual decline of downtown retail in the mid-20th century, accelerated by suburban migration and the rise of shopping centers, fundamentally changed the character of the neighborhood. The building remains standing today, a survivor among the few 19th-century commercial structures that still line this stretch of Locust Street, though the retail environment that originally supported its construction has long since disappeared.
