The structure displays Ittner's emerging approach to educational architecture, with its symmetrical façade, prominent entrance, and thoughtful fenestration that prioritized natural light and ventilation in the classrooms.
Adams School was constructed in 1899 as part of a significant expansion of St. Louis's public school system during the late nineteenth century. The building was commissioned by the St. Louis Board of Education during William Ittner's influential tenure as the city's Commissioner of School Buildings, a position he held from 1897 to 1910. Ittner was just beginning to revolutionize school design during this period, and Adams School represents one of his early efforts to create healthier, more functional learning environments for the city's growing student population. The school served the surrounding neighborhood for decades, providing elementary education to generations of St. Louis children. Like many urban schools of its era, Adams School witnessed the demographic shifts that transformed St. Louis throughout the twentieth century, adapting to serve changing communities while maintaining its educational mission.
