About

A four-story loft of brown brick in the middle of the 900 block of Locust, three bays wide. Each bay holds a group of three windows on every upper floor, over stone sills and recessed brick panels, and small paired brackets carry the cornice. The ground floor is a wide shopfront in green-painted metal, with a band of transom windows above it and slender ornamental pilasters carved with diamonds and scrolls. The long west wall is exposed where the corner building at Tenth was torn down. Its upper floors are red brick with rows of windows. Below them, a pale band marks the outline of the lost three-story neighbor, and a wall-sized mural of rainbow stripes now runs along the ground floor beside the empty corner lot.

History

A building permit for 921 Locust was taken out in 1916 by Martin Monti, with Nat Abrahams as architect. By 1942 the building was the home of the Leppert Roos Fur Company, which advertised its furs and fur storage on a large painted sign on the building's west wall, with the Leacock Sporting Goods Company in a storefront below, and the building came to be known as the Leacock Sporting Goods Building. After a lapsed plan to demolish it with the corner building at 923 for a Hotel Indigo, TWG Development of Indianapolis bought the row in 2016 and joined it to the Scruggs-Vandervoort-Barney warehouse next door at 917 as Level on Locust, an apartment conversion designed with ID8 Architects. The corner building at Tenth was demolished for townhouses.
