About

Two low fronts side by side, both painted gray. The eastern one, next to the Cosmopolitan, is brick with two large upper windows under round arches, their heads filled with lattice-pattern panels; the piers between them carry carved capitals, rosettes and a fleur-de-lis ornament. The western one has three tall upper windows between plain pilasters, now behind roll-down shutters, under a frieze of pierced ornament and a simple cornice. A band of ribbed metal runs across both above the storefronts. The west side wall, open to a gated lot, is old red brick, patched where openings have been filled.

History

Around 1900 this stretch of Olive belonged to the city's piano and music row. The Estey Organ Company's St. Louis branch was at 1116 Olive from at least 1898 to 1908, and a musical-instrument dealer was at 1114 in 1907. The 1909 Sanborn map shows five-story lofts at 1114-18 used for piano repair. The site now holds a two-story stuccoed front, so the lofts were either cut down or replaced; when is not yet known. Its storefronts hold a bar and a breakfast-and-lunch diner.
