James Buchanan Eads

Self-taught engineer and inventor who designed the Eads Bridge, the first steel truss bridge in the world. Eads pioneered the use of steel as a primary structural material and employed pneumatic caissons to sink foundations into bedrock beneath the Mississippi River.
