An open-air public pool enclosed on its sides by a two-story colonnade. Square stone piers carried the lower level, where rows of dressing lockers lined the walls behind the pool deck, and the upper level was an open gallery with a pipe railing where spectators crowded to watch the swimmers. Round columns rose from the gallery to carry a timber pergola that shaded its edge. Painted signs on the piers marked the water depth and warned bathers not to spit.
Mullanphy Pool was a city swimming pool on 11th Street between Cass Avenue and Mullanphy Street, in use by about 1910. Photographs from that decade show women swimming under the watch of two lifeguards while crowds filled the gallery above, and families brought children there for swimming lessons.
