A two-story brick schoolhouse at the corner of Iowa Avenue and Meramec Street, built on an 85-by-125-foot lot. Ornamented hoods with louvered shutters topped the window openings, and a small cupola crowned the roofline. An iron fence enclosed the schoolyard along the street frontages. The building held four classrooms with about 250 seats.
The St. Louis Board of Public Schools built the Meramec School at Iowa Avenue and Meramec Street in 1867, at a cost of $11,000. The Board's 1871 annual report already listed it as a completed grammar school; the Board's 1883 dimensional table confirms the same 1867 construction date. A separate note in the Board's 1872 report describes the school as "transferred" that year, without further explanation. A Missouri History Museum photograph of the building, captioned "Meramec School. Meramec and Iowa Streets," is dated ca. 1901. The building was demolished in 1909. The Board replaced it with a new Meramec School, designed by William B. Ittner, completed in 1910.
