Meramec School (1867)

A two-story brick schoolhouse at the corner of Iowa Avenue and Meramec Street, built on an 85-by-125-foot lot. Ornamented hoods with louvered shutters topped the window openings, and a small cupola crowned the roofline. An iron fence enclosed the schoolyard along the street frontages. The building held four classrooms with about 250 seats.

The St. Louis Board of Public Schools built the Meramec School at Iowa Avenue and Meramec Street in 1867, at a cost of $11,000. It was in use as a grammar school by 1871. The building was demolished in 1909, and the Board replaced it with a new Meramec School, designed by William B. Ittner, completed in 1910.
