A three-story brick school on a raised basement, in a restrained Romanesque Revival manner. A projecting central pavilion holds a columned entrance porch at ground level and a group of three round-arched windows at the top floor. Round-arched windows line the ground floor of the side elevation, and tall rectangular windows fill the upper floors between brick piers. A deep cornice on closely spaced brackets runs around the flat roof, and a second, similarly detailed three-story wing stands alongside.
The Board of Education bought a lot on McPherson Avenue between Vandeventer Avenue and Sarah Street for $24,000 and in June 1891 let the contract for a twelve-room school there for $41,000. The building, attributed to Alfred M. Baker, was finished during the 1891–92 school year at a cost of about $49,300. Additions followed in 1895 and 1899. The school was still teaching in the 1960s, and by 1987 it housed Marquette Visual and Performing Arts School.
