Fowler Playground Bath House

Also known as Fowler Playground
ca. 1910
Updated October 2026
About

A small frame bath house set on the bare dirt yard of the Fowler Playground, walled in horizontal boards on a low base. A band of latticed openings ran beneath the eaves to let in light and air, and a shallow, broad-eaved roof covered the whole. Children entered through a plain board door at one corner.

History

The bath house stood on the Fowler Playground at 7th Street and Russell Avenue, one of six playgrounds run in the early 20th century by the Open Air Playground Committee of the Civic Improvement League, a private civic group. Each of its playgrounds had both a small library and a bath house. A lantern slide from about 1910 shows a line of girls in summer dresses waiting their turn at the door.
