Engine Company 35 has answered alarms from the corner of Arsenal Street and Sublette Avenue since around the turn of the twentieth century. A photograph dated May 4, 1932 already shows the two-story brick station on this corner, a bread truck at the curb and the dome of the City Insane Asylum — now the St. Louis Psychiatric Rehabilitation Center — rising behind it on Arsenal. The building was modernized in the mid-twentieth century. A stone tablet on its front records the 1953 municipal bond issue, and the original apparatus doors have given way to a single wide sectional overhead door sized for motorized pumpers, while the brick walls, hipped roof and stone-framed entrance survive from the earlier station. Fire Station 35 remains an active St. Louis Fire Department engine house, carried on the city's list of operating firehouse locations at 5450 Arsenal Street. Its exact construction year is unsettled: one firehouse history gives 1895, while the architecture and the 1932 view point to the first decade or two of the twentieth century.
