About

As one of the segregated schools established for African American students in St. Louis during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, it likely followed the modest, utilitarian brick schoolhouse designs typical of the era's neighborhood schools.

History

Colored School No. 6 was one of the segregated public schools established by the St. Louis Board of Education to serve African American children during the era of legally mandated racial separation in Missouri's public education system. The school was located at 6138 Virginia Avenue, serving the Black community in the southern portion of the city during the late nineteenth century. Like other numbered "Colored Schools" in St. Louis, it operated under the separate-but-equal doctrine that characterized American public education before the civil rights era. The school served its community for several decades before being demolished in 1911. Its closure and demolition likely coincided with the broader reorganization of St. Louis's segregated school system during the early twentieth century, as the city consolidated smaller neighborhood schools into larger, more modern facilities. The African American population in St. Louis was growing and shifting during this period, prompting the school board to reassess the locations and capacities of its segregated institutions. No trace of Colored School No. 6 remains at the Virginia Avenue site today, and the building has largely faded from public memory. Its history, however brief in the documentary record, represents an important chapter in the story of African American education in St. Louis and the long struggle for equal educational opportunity that would not see meaningful progress until decades after the school's demolition.
