About

The nineteenth-century predecessor of the 1940 Clinton School. Build year, architect, exact site, and appearance are not yet documented.

History

The original Clinton School — recorded as the Clinton Branch School — stood at 1224 Grattan Street, the same site as its successor. A May 1926 photograph by the city's Department of Streets and Sewers, taken from the school's courtyard, looks south toward the old City Hospital complex at 1515 Lafayette. The building was presumably cleared around 1940, when the present Clinton School was built on the site alongside the Clinton-Peabody Homes. Its construction date and architect are unconfirmed; SLPS Annual Reports and Official Proceedings are the likely sources.

Last stood at
1109 Grattan St, St. Louis, MO 63104 (per MHS; SLPL's 1926 item says 1224 Grattan — addresses conflict)
