The Carondelet School is a substantial three-story brick building that reflects the utilitarian Italianate styling common to institutional architecture of the early 1870s. Its rectangular massing, segmental-arched windows with stone hood molds, and prominent cornice with decorative brackets give the structure a dignified civic presence along Minnesota Avenue.
The Carondelet School was constructed in 1871 to serve the educational needs of Carondelet, which at that time was still an independent city south of St. Louis. Designed by architect Frederick Raeder, the building represented a significant civic investment by the community, which had grown prosperous through its iron foundries and river trade. Carondelet took pride in providing modern educational facilities for its residents, and this substantial schoolhouse reflected those ambitions during a period of rapid growth. Just five years after the school's completion, Carondelet was annexed by the City of St. Louis in 1870, and the building became part of the St. Louis Public Schools system. Throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, the school served generations of children from the surrounding working-class neighborhood, many of whom came from German and later Eastern European immigrant families employed in the nearby manufacturing plants along the river. The building continued to function as a public school for many decades, adapting to the changing demographics and educational needs of the Carondelet community. Like many historic school buildings in St. Louis, it eventually faced questions about its future as enrollment patterns shifted and the district consolidated facilities. Today, the Carondelet School remains standing on Minnesota Avenue, a testament to the civic pride of the once-independent river town and one of the oldest surviving school buildings in the southern portion of the city.
